I've just got my first year results through today and they weren't amazing! I got a 2.2 in my first year was predicted a first...I'm sure ill be able to get one in second and third years. I understand that a 2.1 (second class- first division) is an lsac rating of above average, is this the same for a 2.2 (second class - second division)?

Also, do top 10 schools especially schools like Yale look at the reputation of your undergrad institution, mine isn't amazing probs 40 out of 100 approx in the top 100 english rankings- so not amazing!

Please help!

English student.

You aren't getting into Yale with a 2.2, even one from your first year, unless you are granted the very rare blessing of having LSAC consider it above-average (if you are within one or two points of the 2.1, or for some other reason LSAC deems it so) and the rest of your report is a first.

As for prestige, probably doesn't matter unless it's Oxbridge, to a very lesser extent maybe one of the London colleges.

hth.

Yes but because a 2.2 is within the second class division surely it would be above average. Also if my next two year marks are high firsts, surely this would equate to it being ranked OVERALL (which is the only thing that the law schools I'm applying to do, they don't look @ the breakdown for international students) then it would rank as a superior, no?

This is completely and utterly my fault for feeding the troll.

Look, people have answered your question. Numerous times and with more detail than frankly you deserve considering your wild speculations about having a first and getting a 175 and then making it in American politics. You have just finished your first year. The purpose of these boards is not to walk you through each step of your life, only the part where you're actually applying to or attending law school. My suggestion, and others before have said similar, is to find a job in London biglaw (if you can) and get a transfer. By the time you factor in 3 years of jd and another for travelling, what have you, it will take around the same amount of time and you'll have been working and hopefully saving, not spending $200k.

well sorry but i just have a lot of questions. i don't think you get how lsac uses international students reports, if im not mistaken no breakdown is given hence only the overall grade. I was just wondering with one 2.2. and two firsts would equate to a 'superior' overall. No need to get mean.

Justwondering, I think you're right that the ranking (Superior, Above Average, etc) depends on the overall grade. However, schools also get to see your overall grade breakdown. Along with the LSAC report, they'll get a copy of your transcript (showing grades for each separate class). Schools like Yale, who get a lot of international applicants, will understand what those grades mean. Others can figure it out using the information on the LSAC report.

Common wisdom seems to be a Superior is mandatory to get consideration at Yale (or any T6 and much of the T14). Think that there are plenty of English applicants that get straight firsts, a 2.2 will be very difficult to recover from. Don't forget those community college courses you've mentioned in other posts as well. Those will also factor into your evaluation.

On a side note, your previous posts seem to suggest you're a prestige whore with no coherent reason why you want to go to law school.

So say if i was to get a superior ranking overall, yet my breakdown did show that i had received a 2.2. and two firsts could i still have a chance at yale or any T10 like Columbia, Chicago? etc?

i see, but is is still possible thats my question. As to community college courses, im not at any community college, so this isn't an issue, and i don't recall posting such.
I do realise my spelling and grammar are on the bad side and therefore make my posts incoherent but i am dyslexic so im sorry about that, i do apologise.

Ah my bad, it was in a thread you started, but it was another poster that mentioned their CC grades.

schooner wrote:I found a comparison between the British grading system and the American GPA sytem:

According to that chart, a 2:2 (lower second) is roughly equivalent to a GPA of 2.6-2.99. If you keep up those grades, you might not even get into a tier 1 law school, let alone T14.
I hadn't realized that a First encompasses such a huge range of equivalent GPA. 3.1-4.0?? TBH, I thought a First would be something a little more impressive (like >3.7 or something).

And a note to justwondering123: dude, chill out. These daily questions (some of them pretty bizarre) are driving everyone crazy. People are going to get tired of answering them soon and then you won't be able to get advice in a few years when you actually need it.
