Family Work Experience on LS Resume?

Post by Modus Ponens » Wed Jun 22, 2011 12:56 pm

Anyone think a person should include working for an uncle or grandfather on LS resume? Not because it'll be the only thing on the resume or to build it up, but just to give an example of 9-5 disciplined work experience, even if it was for a family member?

Is it obvious from the name of the business that it is a family member? For example, I have a friend who interned at his cousin's investment firm, but they have different last names so you'd never know from looking at his resume that one of the named partners is his cousin.

I don't see any problem with it. Conventional TLS wisdom is that your resume is not nearly as important as LSAT, GPA, and LORs, unless you have some substantial post-UG work experience.

Question - would you have it on your resume if the employer wasn't a family member?

If yes > add

If no > don't add

Working as a full-time waiter/cashier/whatever at your family's restaurant/firm/shop ... yes.
Doing yard work for grandpa for a summer ... no.
