A few of my dad's friends who know me pretty well/have been meeting with me this summer to talk about law school are alumni at schools I'm targeting. Is there much value to getting short letters of recommendation from these lawyers or will the schools write them off as biased/not useful for admissions?

I got one from my employer, who was a Columbia alum. I withdrew after being held and reserved. If these lawyers are just friends and not employers I don't think they have much value. JMHO but focus on teachers and employers.

I'm in the exact same position as you OP (family friend is a graduate of one school I plan on applying to) except I worked for my potential LOR writer for a brief internship a long time ago. So not really the same as an employer, but since I'll already have 2 LORs from professors, I figure this one as the optional LOR can't hurt, so I plan on going ahead with it.
