I'll agree with you here RUM...and I love Louis Zamperini as much as the next American, but didn't you think it was a little overkill at the end? I understand it was based on his experiences(which were amazing) but after the 3rd or 4th POW camp I became a little disinterested...everything leading up to it was great though.RUM wrote:I was pretty surprised by this, but laura hillenbrand's new book "Unbroken" was really entertaining, pretty easy summer read as well.

driftwood i see what you're saying and i didn't really feel taht way but i see what you're saying especially cause his experiences at the different camps weren't all that different, and it did run on a little at towards the end, but i enjoyed it and it was interesting that an author that made her career writing about horses chose this topic.

Agreed. I still think I would have thrown that guy who ate the chocolate overboard.RUM wrote:driftwood i see what you're saying and i didn't really feel taht way but i see what you're saying especially cause his experiences at the different camps weren't all that different, and it did run on a little at towards the end, but i enjoyed it and it was interesting that an author that made her career writing about horses chose this topic.

Re: Great Books to Read Before Heading to Law School
I am loving some of the suggestions on this thread and would love to see more suggestions. So in that spirit, here is some more random goodness that I'll add:
The three volume Edmund Morris Biography of Theodore Roosevelt is fantastic:
The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt (birth to presidency)
Theodore Rex (presidency)
Colonel Roosevelt (presidency to death)
The Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O'Brien is very good if you are into that sort of thing. The film "Master and Commander" was based on these, and this is also the title of the first book.
The Log from the Sea of Cortez by Steinbeck (for the Steinbeck fans)

He's not for everybody, but Chuck Klosterman has some great stuff. I've read everything of his except the his fiction novel and it's always gold. Try "Eating the Dinosaur"

The only DFW I have read is the Consider the Lobster collection of essays. The one covering the AVN awards and the one following McCain on the campaign trail were great. Most were very good. A few stunk.

If you are really interested in Con Law and want to get some different perspectives on the cases (from a conservative standpoint) check out:
Men in Black (Mark Levin)
Scalia Dissents (Scalia)
The Supreme Court (Rehnquist) (Not really a "conservative" perspective but I found this an excellent source to consult when taking con-law if nothing else to give context to some of the bigger cases)
Other good books on statutory interpretation from a originalist perspective:
A Matter of Interpretation (Scalia)
Originalism - A Quarter Century of Debate (Calabresi)
Another great book from a "free-markets" oriented judge:
How Judges Think (Posner)

Re: Great Books to Read Before Heading to Law School
The two law related books I'm reading are Getting to Maybe and LEEWS. I don't see why people bash LEEWS; I'm have a good time going through the audio program and I'm learning a few things that might turn out to be helpful. Some people say LEEWS is a "dumbed down" version of Getting to Maybe, but I think the two books complement each other well.
As far as non-law reading, I've been obsessed with Montaigne's Essays (Frame translation is good) this summer. How did I not know about this guy sooner? I've also been reading some Seneca, which is great, as well as the Richmond Lattimore translation of the New Testament...which is interesting, since he's a classical Greek scholar.
And just for fun I read Suttree (McCarthy), The Autobiography of Red (Carson), Great Expectations (Dickens), Absalom, Absalom (Faulkner), The Great Gatsby (Fitzgerald), A Confederacy of Dunces (Toole), and Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (do not read).

I'd say Atlas Shrugged or The Fountainhead. Animal Farm is a fun one too. So is 1984.

Two other excellent books that I have not seen posted on this thread;
Making Your Case by Antonin Scalia - For those who may be turned off by Scalia's ideology, this book deals only with rhetorical techniques and is not a conservative polemic. Provides great advice with regards to how to present both oral and written arguments.
The Constitution of Liberty by F.A. Hayek - Especially Part II: Freedom and the Law.
