Top Law Schools

I was in foster care until the age of 12 ( which is really old for kids to be adopted). I'm applying to Temple, Brooklyn, Hofstra, and some other higher schools. What I was wondering is if the law schools take into account any hardships that you have had to overcome. Only 2% of 555,000 foster children obtain a Bachelors degree.Would that put me in the place of a URM during the application process?

I have a 2.8 ( Economics major), 162 LSAT. I'm also an Eagle Scout, a member of the Alpha Tau Omega National leadership fraternity, and member of the Bloomsburg investment group

I'm not sure if you'd receive the same admission benefits as an URM would, but I think being a former foster child will help.

Also, wow to the 2% stat - that's incredible - and congrats on being part of that group.

I can't say whether it makes you a URM...but it ought to help you write a killer personal statement.

I think that depending on how you work it, it could certainly give you an admissions boost. As another poster said, it will at least make for an interesting PS - especially if you can tune them into the fact that you are a rare minority in the stats of foster kids with a college education.

I would also work, if you have any interest in this at all, a "because of my experience, I think that I think that I would like to become a child advocate" bit into your PS. Young people who are working their way through the foster care and juvenile court systems need advocates that understand their situations and can help them rise above their circumstances. I think that you could really underscore what kind of beneficial characteristics you could bring to a schools child advocacy program if you pointed this out, and you might even find that some of the clinical work they offer during law school is really interesting. Even if you don't ultimately go this route when 3 years are up, I think that it is a good initial angle to frame your PS around.

OP, it certainly will not give you a boost equivalent to that of a URM. But I'm sure it will make a compelling story in either your PS or DS. Good luck!
