I am on the wait list for USD, and I know an alum of USD who is a family friend. If I have never worked with this person, but she knows me, could I have her call USD? Would this help at all?

You should just have them send a letter or email. I don't see how it could possibly hurt. Actually, a pretty well known alumni sent an email on my behalf to the admissions office of one of the schools at which i was waitlisted. I have not yet been admitted (fingers crossed) and I don't think I will ever have any clue as to whether or not it helped me in any way whatsoever.

Probably won't really help, but probably won't hurt either. Go for it I guess.

Friend of my parent's knows a guy on an adcomm at the law school he graduated from. He offered to make a call, and I got in being 5 points below the school's LSAT 25th. Not the same situation as your's obviously, but alum's can be helpful, especially if they know the right people.
