How many semesters are necessary to constitute an upward trend in gpa? im guessing one really good semester 3.8 plus a summer class are probably not enough

Upward trends really don't matter that much, so neither does what officially constitutes it. I suppose you would want at least a full academic year of significant improvement to claim that it demonstrates a newfound appreciation of academic achievement in an addendum though.
