How important is undergrad prestige?

I'm currently a sophomore at the University of South Carolina with a 3.65 GPA. Is there anyone else from an SEC school who didn't make perfect grades or score extremely high on the LSAT and still got into a top law school?

Furthermore, what is the general perception of the SEC in the law community as far as academic prestige and student quality is concerned? I am extremely interested to get some feedback on this matter.

UG prestige barely matters, if at all.

Not important at all except for possibly a very slight bump for the very top undergrads when applying to the very top schools.

It does not.

I'm not going to even caveat that with the "slightly" remarks from the posters above.

Like everyone else said, you could go to Podunk University and get into Yale with a 4.0 and 176. I'm glad I decided to go to a first-tier university despite the increased difficulty, but during exam week part of me can't help but look back wistfully at that fourth-tier, full ride, guaranteed 4.0 option.

As for your case, SEC doesn't mean shit but I'm not too confident about your chances with a 3.65 and subpar LSAT. Depending on your actual LSAT result, you're looking at bottom T-14 max.

IT IS THE BEST CONFERENCE EVER. SEC! SEC! SEC!

Undergrad prestige doesn't matter and FWIW, many of my friends at UF are going to T14 law schools next year. I'll probably be at NYU. :D good luck!!

you'll need it...because South Carolina is GATOR BAIT!!!!

The correct answer, in life as in sports, is that people who aren't involved with the SEC think about the SEC less than you think that they think about the SEC.

You're fucked because you went to the University of South Carolina, not because of your conference affiliation. And you're not fucked because school prestige matters. You're fucked because choosing South Carolina shows a level of decision making that is not conducive to a productive life.

HTH.

Wow. I will elect not to respond to that comment tonight because vented frustration has no place on a public forum in my opinion.

BTW; I have several friends going to T-10 law schools from USC

Unless you went to HYP, it won't matter. Even if you went to HYP the boost is minimal. No undergrad institution will make up for a horrible LSAT/GPA.

It matters very little. LSAT/GPA matter 10X more.

Next time use search function.

They will also fail. They may have been able to beat the odds for this long, but eventually their true colors will show. Anyone dumb enough to spend four years at the University of South Carolina will struggle in life. It's a scientific fact.

I created the thread because the people I know are special circumstances. I'm looking for some input concerning a normal situation, one with a strong application, but not an application that particularly sticks out

I heard that law schools prefer the Big 10 - something about a more balanced style of play.

not very important, i think the only times it matters are:

1) comparing 2 identical applicants
2) might slightly, and i mean slightly, help justify a lower UGPA

Remember, for most law schools its a number game and names of schools are not numbers. :D
