Help Law School Transparency crowdsource 2010 job info
Posted: Wed Apr 20, 2011 7:23 pm
As mentioned in my other thread on LST's data clearinghouse, http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 2&t=153751, the Class of 2009 employment information provided by U.S. News is the most up-to-date, easily comparable employment information available. Schools reported data for the Class of 2009 to U.S. News in late 2010, which appeared on the U.S. News website in March 2011.
Schools have the employment data underlying the employment information that law schools post on their websites and eventually report to U.S. News and the ABA. Schools report to NALP much sooner, by (or around) late February and early March. Almost every school reports to NALP by mid-March. This is because these data are for post-graduation outcomes as of February 15th following the most recent graduating period (9/1/2009 – 8/31/2010 for the Class of 2010).
As many of you know, very few schools have posted Class of 2010 employment information. This is problematic for those of you wanting to have a better picture of employment opportunities from different law schools. While Class of 2014 (and Class of 2015) outcomes may not resemble Class of 2010 outcomes any more than 2009, 2008, or 2007, it is useful to watch trends at schools, again, to get a picture of opportunities. After all, many 0Ls seek to find the school that has the opportunities that best match their career objectives.
LST's goal is to accelerate the process. Law schools take too long to post this information and the first step to accelerating disclosure - outside of our discussions with the ABA Section of Legal Education - is to figure out which schools have posted 2010 employment information already. This is separate from reforming the kind of disclosure, but that is at least taking care of itself a bit as pressure mounts to provide better consumer information.
This is where you all come in. We are a small staff and hope that some of you are willing to donate some time to help us with this preliminary research. If you're still with me, here's what you can do:
Instructions
(1) grab 5 or 10 schools and post that you are researching those schools before actually doing anything. This will prevent unnecessary work for the volunteers. Start from the top of the list and, if somebody has claimed the schools already (and reasonable time hasn't elapsed), move on to the next X schools you can do.
(2) visit the law school's website and look for any Class of 2010 employment information. For each page you find information on, link to it with a description of the kind of information provided.
(3) if there's no 2010 information, state the most recent class for which there is any employment information. It will likely be 2009, but some may still have only 2008 and some will not have any at all (these schools are the exceptions, not the rule).
(4) edit your post with the information you've collected.
If anybody has time to double check other people's work, that would be great. Just indicate that you have.
Thanks in advance to anybody who is able to help with this. It will be an incredible help to us at LST and, hopefully, to prospective law students across the country.
