If you are deferred on Hold, then you are heading to WL, but with a very slim chance of acceptance. Some people write insane Letters of Continued Interest and essays and get in, but I would bet on heading to WL.

I think that hold is best. Its a group of applications they want to hold until the applicant/acceptance pool develops further. It probably means that you are right on the edge, and in a slightly better position than if you were waitlisted. A lot of hold applications will eventually wind up on the waitlist.

That's got waitlist vs. hold; a deferral just means that they're going to (re)consider your application at a later date.

deferred/hold is the best. Waitlist is pretty much a soft rejection in 90% of the cases.

Awesome news for me, Im writing FSU a LOCI tonight!
Some schools have something they call an Alternate for Admissions. Is this considered Waitlist?
