3.89 vs. 3.90

When I send out ED apps in Fall 2011, my GPA will stand at 3.89. I've been curious if law school's see a large difference between the '8' in 3.89 vs. a 3.90. For example, I wonder if the difference between a 3.88 and 3.89 looks the same as the difference between a 3.89 and 3.90 for law schools. Any ideas?

Here's an idea. No. We aren't talking 169 to 170 on the LSAT. That is probably the only place where the aesthetic difference of such an extremely minute figure may actually have an effect. But 3.89 to 3.9? Thats the same thing, and both are excellent so don't worry.

Not really. You'll be at/above median for every school in the country except Yale. Also, ED appS?

3.9 vs. 3.89 will probably be the difference between an acceptance or waitlist at your ED school. Maybe if you write an addendum you'll be ok.

edit: nm, I just realized you were applying to FL coastal. Florida Coastal DEFINITELY cares, as noone gets in with less than a 3.90. Better update your resume quick.

I know my 189 is below their 25% so I'm thinking I'll probably need the addendum for the GPA. Ugh guess it's gonna be Cooley now

What about 4.0 v. 4.1? Both GPAs exceed 75% of any law school GPA. Is it worthy to boost GPA as much as I can due to LSAT*GPA index? The higher, The better Always?

I'll make you a sandwich if you apply to Florida Coastal and include an addendum for your GPA.

What kind of school do you go to where you can guarantee that you can get an A+ in a class to boost your GPA? Forget the A+ is stupid argument, I just am curious as to how you can be sure to get one.

Yup, here it matters. Look at the (tiny) difference it makes on LSN when you plug in a 170 with a 4.0 vs with a 4.1, then 4.2. Now try that with 171, 172, 173. Not a huge diff, but can certainly help. With my 173 I stand a shot at HY, but my 4.2 definitely is better than one with a 4.0.

HYS don't care about the between 4.0 and 4.2. They know that a 4.0 at a school were 4.0 is the highest grade may represent anything from 4.0 to 4.33. HYS may choose a 4.2 over a 4.0 only if everything else is exactly identical. Same thing goes for 4.0 and 4.1.

Does it matter if a person's grades dramatically improved towards the end of his UG? That is to say, if a person had a 2.0 for Fresh and Soph, then 4.0 for Jun and Sen, would the admissions only see "3.0 GPA" or would they actually note that it was 4.0 for the final years?

Here's an idea. No. We aren't talking 129 to 130 on the LSAT. That is probably the only place where the aesthetic difference of such an extremely minute figure may actually have an effect. But 3.1 to 3.9? Thats the same thing, and both are excellent so don't worry.
