Top Law Schools

(No kiddie remarks please)

I don't really believe that the actual quality of legal education you can receive at these less popular schools is inferior to the T14s. But, I do wonder about the lack of job opportunities. This is a legitimate concern because a student at lower tiered schools pay the same tuition as most top 10 schools, and it's not chump change. I want to understand your unquenched desire to attend law school at all costs.

I am going to a TTT at sticker in a crowded market because I want to help people in need after I become a lawyer. I don't care if I'm 200k in debt -- as long as I am doing work that satisfies me as a person, I will be ok.

I'm probably going to attend a 3rd tier school. It is a state school in the area I want to practice and would leave me with little to no debt (likely less than 10,000 if any). Even if I graduate and can't find gainful employment that utilizes my JD at least I won't have unmanageable debt. Additionally, I feel like the likelihood of me graduating higher in my class at the lower ranked school somewhat offsets the lower employment prospects of the schools around the T1 T2 borderline that I have the opportunity to attend. Sure sounds a lot better than the 100,000-150,000 thousand in debt that I would be looking at if I attended the T1 or T2 schools I've been accepted.

Public defender jobs don't exactly grow on trees. How do you feel about document review?

OP: are you doing some kind of survey or anthropological study on law students? I know you have asked the similar questions a few times. I just wondered why?

Doc reviewers work pretty hard. Hard work misapplied won't get you anywhere.

For example, it makes a lot more sense to work hard studying for the LSAT than to work your way into the top 5% of a 3rd tier school.

One thing I have noticed about T3 and T4 schools is that they tend to be substantially more practical in their approach, for better or worse. They usually focus on skills-based topics and favor looking earlier on at what the practice of law is like.

Most of the school in the upper-echelons are more theoretical in nature. They see themselves more as "lawyering" schools, where you are trained to think about the law theoretically, how it works, ways to challenge it, etc. rather than what it is like out in the real world and some of the stuff that you can do with it.

Onto your question, I really do think some T3s serve a very good function. A lot of them are in areas that don't otherwise have legal markets that are being served. And if you happen to want to practice in one of those areas, then a T3 just might be a good option for you. Also, in all fairness, some of those schools really do cost less and, for many, that is their motivation. This is not always true, however, and I think that those paying full-on sticker at a T4 probably just couldn't get in anywhere else and they really want a law degree... and that is their motivation.

As to why a number of other people want a law degree, the reasons vary tremendously. Some just want one for the sake of having a JD or see it as a step towards obtaining something else; some want to work in the legal field. And as with people at almost any school, some are more realistic about what they need to do than others.

But in any case, I do agree that you really need to think about it if you're in such a position that you are paying full-on sticker at a T4 that charges more than $12K or so (as a small handful of them really do get up into the $30K-$40K range).

But I'm different. I know I'll succeed. I have very strong work ethics. I know those people who do doc review only got bad grades because they didn't try hard enough.
