Top Law Schools

Decent scholarship at SMU Dedman and hoping to get some money from Colorado as well. What would you do?

My roots are in KC, and I plan on staying in the Midwest. Planning/Hoping to land a job in Kansas City, Dallas, St. Louis, or Chicago post JD.

Sounds like all 3 are good options. You might want to go with WUSTL since it's stronger in the KC/Texas/St Louis area.

I'd probably narrow it down between Minnesota and WUSTL, with an edge to WUSTL. But a free education would be pretty tempting.

Minnesota. If you're from KC and I imagine you have some personal connections that lack of debt is superior to job placement from WUSTL imo. Minnesota doesn't do too bad in job placement there anyway.

How are you saying Minnesota? It's far more remote from his targets than the other two options. I'd say Wash U easily. It's got better prestige than the other two, its more proximate to his targets and he's still getting pretty decent money. No brainer. Do the WUSTL.

This. 114k isn't far off from a full ride anyway.

Sounds like WUSTL is the general consensus. Any tips on negotiating dollar amounts? How does one even go about doing so?

If you have that much as WashU, I would only look at WashU and SMU. I would think that SMU would offer you a full ride given how much WashU has offered you. I would remove the others primarily because WashU is considered to be superior than those two and is in the same region as them. Texas would be a lot harder to get from WashU, and thus a full ride from SMU (or more) would make it competitive here.

I applied to both SMU and WUSTL. Received 114k from WUSTL and just over 100k from SMU. HTH

Forgot to mention a near full-ride to a local TTT. Y'all still think WUSTL, even though the TTT is located in the heart of the city where I very likely may end up?

The CoA difference between a full tuition scholarship and WUSTL's 114k is probably not that large once you factor in cost of living on to both of them.

Still go WUSTL. Since you're local, WUSTL won't hold you back from coming back to the market once you've graduated, but going to a local TTT will hurt you from going anywhere else. Also, in theory, WUSTL WOULD provide a better education and make you a better lawyer.

No no no no to SMU. SMU isn't as mobile as the other options. It's great in Dallas and good in Texas, but you're not getting nearly as broad a net as the other options.

Consensus must be Wash U.
