Is it common for those applying to NYLS to be invited to do an online video interview or is it only done for those applicants they are really looking at? For helping in splitter decisions? Anyone have any experience with this?

Probably for helping with borderline candidates. Like you suggest, it means they're considering you (i.e., you aren't auto-reject), but it also means you aren't autoadmit. I don't know specifics about New York Law beyond their numbers and what TLS' profile says, however.

I chose not to do it (it is optional) and still got my acceptance.

Better question would be, why the hell are you applying to NYLS?
