If a school accepts you for the 2011-2012 school year, can you defer until 2012-2013 and still be guaranteed acceptance? Or is it school-specific?

School-specific, and you usually need a good reason.

Actually you usually just need to ask early. Most T14's have very lax deferral policies.

It's school specific, but generally you don't need a good reason. I deferred one year, and my school had a published, well-known deferral deadline. After I chose to defer, all they asked was that i reply to the school by february stating that I still had the interest to come to the school, that i hadn't been arrested or dishonorably discharged, and a quick letter as to what I'd done in the year off. They also had the option to defer for two years, but that required a commitment to the peace corps, teach for america, or something like that.
