Should I write a Why UVA in addition to already appying ED?

Post by treeborn » Mon Dec 20, 2010 5:10 pm

Hey all,

Just received a notification from UVA that they've received my ED form, so I have 15 days or less until they review my application.

Would writing a Why UVA letter be helpful in increasing my chances of admission? I know I'm an extreme reverse splitter, but would the ED be sufficient? I am just worried that my Why letter won't come across as sincere enough, and that that could be harmful to my application.

If I do choose to write and send a Why UVA letter, can I just email the letter to their admissions email address?

Thanks for an input/ advice.

Why X is not needed when applying ED, imo.

Thank you for your input! Definitely heard this before, looking for more corroboration/ dissent.

This article gives reasons to write a Why X essay and reasons not to write one. I believe it was written by Van Winkle. Under the reasons not to write one, it says that writing an essay can be redundant because applying ED is already the ultimate Why X essay in itself. I did not write one and was accepted to UVA ED earlier this cycle. I don't think it will help much and a poorly written essay can certainly hurt you.

If you can't write a compelling "Why UVA?" essay then don't bother with one. They don't need to hear "You are my best shot at the T-14 and seem to admit my kind (splitters)."

Thanks for your input! I suppose I will not be writing the Why X letter!
