Is there any advantage associated with gender when it comes to admission/funding decisions?

AA male probably gets more URM boost than AA female, due to the small number of applicants. Other than that, not really.

AA male gets URM boost than AA female? Why would that be?

So, if I'm a boring, white girl, I don't stand a better chance than a similarly situated, boring, white guy?

Absolutely, 100% not. This isn't the 60's. There is no longer any sort of female/male gender disparity in admission or student body numbers. Sure, there is still a disparity in salary figures and representation amongst partners/executives/etc. But that has nothing to do with admissions to law school. If anything, there are more females than males currently in law school.

1) AA male gets URM boost than AA female? Why would that be?

2) So, if I'm a boring, white girl, I don't stand a better chance than a similarly situated, boring, white guy?
1) Because as im_blue mentioned, more African American women apply to law school than AA men, and because each school wants some of both they do more to get the men to attend, thus giving them a bigger admissions boost.

2) Correct.

This is really interesting. I had no idea.

Thanks for the responses.

I've definitely seen this trend enough to think there was something to it. I hate getting into racially-charged discussions that arouse any sort of controversy, but I don't think there is any harm in sharing mere observations from first-hand accounts. I live fairly close to some pretty bad neighborhoods that are predominantly AA, and have many friends within that community. I find that MANY more of the females in that community strive and work to rise up and make their way out. I have no idea why this is the case, but there is certainly truth to the trend, as the numbers indicate.

Ivey guide says that females get a small bump, but I am guessing that is because she did admissions at Chicago which probably has a male skewed applicant pool.

Did the Ivey guide say anything about Asians?

At some T14's Asian females out number males almost 2 to 1. Maybe I will get a little boost (over Asian females)? :?

Most schools I've looked at seem to be like this also. I guess more qualified Asian females apply to those law schools compared to Asian males?

Maybe Asian males don't like to study as much  This seems to be the case for other grad schools. I wonder what are the numbers for UG and other schools.

Male applicants would be the ones getting the boost right?

It wasn't a dumb question, I don't know why you all are ragging on OP so much.
Ivey Guide wrote:Women are given a slight preference in admissions because men consistently tend to outperform them on the LSAT. The gap isn’t huge (a difference of 1.47 scaled points, according to this report), but the gap is there, so being female can make a difference on the margin. Men tend to dominate the very high scores as well. According to this article, in 2001 to 2006, a third of a percent of female test takers scored 175 or above, compared to three fourths of a percent for male test takers.
whymeohgodno wrote:Did the Ivey guide say anything about Asians?
Yes, she says Asians (and Middle Easterners) are considered in the same bucket as whites for admissions purposes.

hmm I don't think so... So far it seems Asian males and females are almost perfectly even. I remember when I looked at LSAC stats it was pretty much 50/50 too.

I'm confused. Shouldn't those stats add up to 100%?

I think the percentages are for the overall student body so no.

That makes no sense. Cornell doesn't have over 31% Asian population.

It does seem a bit high doesn't it? I wouldn't be surprised though.
