I read somewhere that it might be beneficial to include encounters with other cultures on your resume. I funded my own trip to England and Italy a couple of years ago, should I list that?

I wouldnt. im pretty sure about 50% of people have done study abroad in europa or at least met a couple of foreigners in their lives. Then again, it wouldnt hurt you at all to include it if you have room on the ole resume

So the culture has to be more foreign for it to count?

If you can make your financing of it sound good sure. If you are just listing travel experience, that is not worth the space.

No, it's that it should be more than just a trip you took. Living in England or Italy for a year =/= vacation.

Have you been to Italy? I think they're permanently on vacation there. I mean, it's not Spain, but still... they've got their priorities straight.

You should definitely put your vacation to Europe on your resume. Why wouldn't you?

It could be a subject for a diversity statement. But don't list it on your resume unless you actually did official study abroad.
