Top Law Schools

NYU's official policy is to average scores. I have a 161 from Feb of '09 and 170 from Oct '10. Is there any point to putting in an app or would my average be too low for them? Also, does the fact that there is over a year between my scores have any impact on whether they would put more weight on the highest score?

You should apply. An addendum why you got the low score would help maybe, if you have a good reason for it.

yea, i have a valid reason for the lower score... i was prepping before I had found TLS. Seriously though, i do have an addendum already with a pretty decent explanation so I will submit that for sure.

That, IMO, is not a valid reason. I would say you were sick or something.

I can offer the same reason for my 164 on my first LSAT.

You should definitely apply. I know of a current NYU student that would not have been admitted based on their first LSAT score in the mid 60s. They too included an LSAT addendum with their application.

With that being said, understand that your second LSAT score is slightly below NYU's median, so it might be an uphill climb regardless. It is definitely worth the application fee to though. In the grand scheme of things, $87 hardly compares to the cost of law school.

I got a 170 TLS free. Isn't that a URM-like boost to break 170 without ever visiting TLS?

I am hoping this averaging thing is real. Makes my 173 worth more given the multitude of retakers out there. Sorry majority of TLS.

Based on LSN, it looks like you should be fine if you have a 3.8 or higher.

Please give credit where it is due though. If someone earns a 173 on the first or second try, they still earned the score.

I will give them credit but I hope NYU doesn't. NYU is a big reach with my gpa far from 3.8 (more like 3.5) so I am hoping I can pull off some magic with my first day app.

NYU doesn't average strictly. Just look at lsn and you'll see this is true. In fact, there isn't a school that strictly averages. Even looking at data from hys you will see that people get in with lsat averages that would not get tthem in if they didn't have a higher score.

Eh it won't ding you but it will be a negative on your application that will hold you back in comparison between you and similar applicants with 168/170s or straight up 170's. Just apply.

I applied without an addendum (ED -- yeah, I know it's a long shot). I didn't have any real excuse for my 165 in June, other than that I studied too hard towards the end and burned myself out. I managed a 170 in October. The difference in score should speak for itself, or at least it'll speak better than some lame addendum I could fabricate.

"They" say a difference of 6+ points should have an addendum, though.
