what is a proper addendum explaining a speeding ticket... do they really need to know this???

Some schools specifically say they do not need to know it, while others ask for it. Just look at the individual applications. If there is any confusion, call the school and ask. About half of the schools I applied to asked for information relating to my ticket. I think an addendum about a speeding ticket is not so much an explanation, rather a statement that it happened. It isn't like one speeding ticket will hurt your application. My addendum was just several sentences.

I had a significant number of speeding tickets but also a period of about 18 months between the most recent one and applying. Full page addendum (admittedly overkill) in which I admitted every in fraction, made no excuses, and highlighted what I had done to correct the behavior. Seemed to work out fine for me, was accepted and given full $. Never heard about it.
