How do LSAT Medians work?

So if a school has hypothetically an LSAT 25/75 of 167/172 and a median of 170, will the distribution look more like this:

160 160 164 165 167 167 168 168 169 169 170 170 170 170 171 172 173 174 175 176 177

or like this:

160 160 166 167 167 170 170 170 170 170 170 172 172 172 172 172 175 176 177 178 180

It looks like a super small difference with such a small sample size of 21, but imagine multiplying this by like 500.

Don't you see how your question doesn't really make sense?

well lets say i have a 168. in the first scenario i will actually be in the group and it looks like i have a shot at getting in. in the second scenario there is no one with a 168. and the only people with anything less than a 170 look slike a URM? I am pushing it haha A LOT but i am just curious...

The schools will know. Perhaps you could ask them.

Only the schools know this.

You'd have to have specific data for all of the school's applicants to know that. I'm not sure that kind of info is available. D'be cool to know though.

EDIT: Cornell's median and 75th are 168, so that lets us know alittle bit about the exact class composition. Maybe you can glean something similar about some other schools.

Stanford accepts very few < 170 even with a 3.9+ GPA. Retake.

Honestly, every schools distribution is remarkably different. Go to LSN and look at some of the graphs from last year, it will give you a sense of the variation you'll find. Basing your chances on admission by simply looking at the 25/50/75 marks is relatively rudimentary, and requires a ton of assumptions. That's why I hate it when people give admissions advice like "Oh, well your under their 25th for LSAT but over their 75th for GPA, you're golden! Have fun at Harvard!"
