Breaking an ED Contract?

I am not asking this for personal reasons, but I am curious. Say someone got into some school they weren't expecting to, got offered a ton of money, developed a reason to need to be in a certain city (family illness, spouse transfer at work, etc). How would the process of getting out of an ED contract work? Would it be possible? Would you be denied acceptance other places? etc etc etc.

If you have not yet been accepted ED, withdraw ASAP.
If you have, enjoy taking a year off before attending law school, supposing the school with the $$ would even let you defer.

So, you would be obligated to either attend the ED school or defer admission one year at another school?

I'm not even positive that you can defer admission. You might have to reapply the next year.

Assuming you were accepted under the binding ED agreement (meaning you weren't deferred to the RD pool first), then yes, you can kiss any other school goodbye this year.
If you did break, the school you broke the ED agreement with would report it out, your new school would probably revoke its offer, and it'd look mighty bad during bar exam time.
You know, hypothetically speaking.

only way is to withdraw from all schools and reapply next year. in some cases, the ED school will let you take back the ED if a decision has not been made yet.

Haha. Don't worry. I am not considering this at all. I just got curious when reading someone else's post about doing 2 EDs

Some people do 2 EDs without violating anything. Ex: Apply ED to UVA that has an earlier deadline, they get rejected or sent to RD pool at UVA but have time to apply elsewhere ED (which has a later deadline).
They have been let go from their ED contract w. UVA because they were rejected/sent to RD.
