Excuse my crappy title, the subject line had to be cut short! Just curious, for those who numbers/etc had a pretty good shot at certain schools-including semi-reaches-why do you think that you did not get into those schools (if you didn't)?

racism /s
but seriously, no one could give you an honest answer to this question. Maybe they applied late, got YP'd, made a serious application error or maybe the ad com just some something they didn't like or was having a bad day. If you apply to enough schools, one of them is going to give you a weird result.

What do you mean by "a shot".
Are you talking about like a 50/50 shot?
Or someone who was above both median kind of shot?

i applied last cycle and got rejected from boalt and upenn when i had numbers above both 75ths. i assumed it was either yp from penn and a combination of not writing the "optional essays"

Well Penn is notorious for YP.
And Berkeley is notorious for being holistic.
So I guess that explains your case.

This. They are both pretty small and selective schools, and can afford to be picky about the applicants they take beyond the numbers.

Either. I noticed that a lot of people are reapplying this year with the same numbers. There was a poster who replied that listed all the possible reasons, but I was curious about reasons from people who actually applied-if they have an idea as to why.
