I'm interested in the answer to this too.

Why would you do this instead of attempting to defer? Is there an advantage that I'm not seeing? To me, it would seem worth a try to defer, and if that didn't work, then re-apply. But maybe I'm missing something.

Just write a withdrawal note to schools x, y and z that says, "my boy toy is taking a job modeling in Milan for a year, and I need to follow him because someone has to fight off the groupies." Then, when you apply next year, they'll pull your file and say, oh yeah, we liked this person, but they had to follow their hot boyfriend around - let's see if anything has changed.
I'm seriously doubting it will somehow become a negative that they accepted you, and you ended up not being able to enroll.

But should we write an addendum anyway? I have been holding off sending the Michigan application until I can think it through. I did have a compelling reason last year (and they understood), but I don't know if I need to explain it.

Who said that? How did you determine that was the attention in September?

With a situation like this, I would literally just call them and ask if its something they would want you to include in your file. I'm leaning towards yes, they'd rather have it be explicit. Since they're going to look at both files anyways, they might want to have that addenda to make sure they're connecting them together properly.

To actually answer the question NO.
It will not hurt you, and in fact it may help you because i am assuming you will have the same numbers plus a year of WE. I have heard that law schools look more favorably upon those who had previously been accepted but something had happened to throw them off track
