as the subject states, I took the LSAT for the first time in October and got a ***, I have a *.** GPA. Before I took the LSAT I expected a higher score, and therefore hyped myself up for USC and UCLA. I still really want USC....Where do you guys think are the highest reasonable schools that I can expect to get into? i'm not getting tons of fee waivers from top 40ish schools, so i'm worried about shelling out the big bucks on schools that I have no chance at.
p.s. long time lurker, first time poster
p.s.s. sorry guys, edited for a little anonymity now that i'm applying around and getting into schools. PM me for details, i'll be more than happy to share

Your numbers are pretty much the same as mine. I'd say you have a pretty good shot in the 40-60 range with a chance at some in the 30's. If you're not going to retake just focus on narrowing down the region where you want to work.

LSN thinks you need a 167 to get a straight up acceptance from USC. 165/166 would get you a WL.

Also, it would help to know what region/state you're looking at. A 3.7/161 would likely get you into some solid regional schools. (Ohio State, Florida, Iowa etc.)

Right now, I don't think you can get in to either with your numbers. On a personal note, I had very similar numbers to you after the june 2010 test. I studied my butt off and got my LSAT to 169. You can do it too. Either bust the books now and retake in december or wait a year get some work xp and apply again. Of course, this only applies if you are set on usc or ucla. If you could be happy somewhere else, send those apps out asap.

If your not set on those schools I think you have a chance at everything above Iowa at 26. Pick towns and just that intrest you and send apps.

I'm pretty much set on a California school but if I got an amazing scholarship somewhere else i'd consider it. I spoke with a lot of representatives today (there was a law school forum at UCLA) and got a lot of feedback, the USC rep seemed surprisingly pushy for me to apply regardless...
I know retaking it is an option but it's going to have to be in june because i'm taking 17 units plus I have a part time job so I basically have zero time to study again.
Burgstaller04, what books did you use to study the second time? I took blueprint classes before, i'm wondering if I should try another company next time around if i decide to retake it.

I did Blueprint and Testmasters. Having used both and they are similar - I would say that your time is better served doing self-study and the plithypike method on TLS.

Games and Args Bibles and any real PT I could get. I never took a class because I didn't have the money so I can't tell you anything about those but I do know I did pretty well without one.

Hey I know you set you would really like these schools, but if you not up for retaking I would definitely apply to UC Davis. You have a decent shot there.

i'm definitely applying to davis and hastings as well... I just really preferred to keep it local, since my SO lives around the LA area as well as the rest of my family. But I would be happy to get into davis or hastings after all. I think i'm still gonna apply to USC and chalk up that 75$ (+12$) as a loss, just to have peace of mind that I applied... I'll let you guys know the status on that.
Does anyone know how long it takes for LSAC to calculate your LSDAS GPA? I have everything in already, i'm just waiting on my transcripts for my community college and UCLA to get to LSAC... does it take a super long time?

dont look too far in your conversation with USC. the admissions people are trying to get as many people as they can to apply there. If you are set on California, look at lawschoolnumbers.com and focus your search on california schools. That willl give you a good idea of the numbers you need, and if you search past cycles, you will see the outcomes of some applications ( granted they are self-selecting, but its a decent guide)

You have to get all transcripts in before LSAC calculates your GPA. You have decent chances at Davis and Hastings, but USC is a certain rejection.
