I would just say something like "I think the higher score is reflective of my abilities since in the first administration I had a family emergency which significantly affected my performance on the test."

I see no point in saying anything about the scores. Telling them you studied more effectively for the 2nd test will not help you at all. The score difference speaks for itself.

thanks for the input! i didn't know if family emergency was legit but that's definitely what it was
