While on one hand a death in the family is a worthwhile reason to write an addendum, I wouldn't necessarily claim to them that your trend shows your grades don't reflect your potential. Your other 3 years together are roughly a 3.1, compared to your cumulative 2.9, that probably isn't a statistically significant difference to them.

2.9 vs 3.1 in admissions would be huge for me - I know an addendum wouldn't help with that because they just care about what gets reported.
