I am applying to Penn/UMich and was wondering how important the why X essays are for them-- I have a 174/3.87 so I feel that I could get in without, but not sure how much they might help for scholarship

If I were in your position I would write them as to not fall victim to YP

Especially since Penn and Michigan are known as the most frequent YPers.

+1. MVP are the most yield-protecting T14s.

So is YP usually a deny or just being put on the waitlist? I definitely want to be considered for merit money at these schools, so I'll go ahead and write the Why X essays

Yield Protect is a waitlist so that their yield numbers don't end up low because they admitted too many people who wouldn't matriculate. "Why X" essays are the best way to avoid ending YP'ed when your numbers would often qualify you for a much better school.

Waitlist most likely they would have a hard time rejecting you. Put some thought into your Why X essays, you need to convince them you are going to attend and not head to CCN.

I have heard of like a reject but not reject status. Like they dont waitlist you, but say that if you dont accept they will. I know Harvard has done this to apps before.

Anyone heard of this?

sounds shady as hell lol, never heard of it.

Unless you mean they waitlist you all the way to the end and see if you withdrew and if not then offer you an acceptance.

What would be the best way of going about this? I know that talking about a specific program or visit experience is typically good, but I don't really have that experience/interest for any of these schools (There are certainly programs that interest me, but none that really stand out/would convince me to go there before all others). Is a relatively simple letter (good academics, good location/environment) not a good idea?

As long as they think that a program is convincing you to go there it is good enough. Pick a program or two write about it and add in their good academic reputation and prestige. I feel if you really research a program and get specific it shows a little more interest. I'm sure everyone talks about academics and prestige.
