I'm a foreigner so I am not eligible to apply for LSAC's fee waiver. I plan to write to schools directly asking for application fee waiver, but will this have bad influence on my application?

Just send out a general email. Here is what I sent -


Dear Office of Admissions -

I will be applying to law school for the entering class of 2010 and would like to be considered for a merit-based fee waiver. I am especially interested in the University of XYXYX and would greatly appreciate any financial assistance you could provide. To assist with this process, I have included my information below. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Plus it only takes about 10 minutes to send them all out...just make sure you change the school name and put your LSAC number / GPA / LSAT at the bottom.

Thank you! I worried that asking for it would make me look bad in front of the admission committee. Still worried... anyone asked for fee waiver and got in?

What negative impact could it possibly have? Are the adcomms going to look poorly upon your application because you dont have the money to send in an application?

I say go for it. People get fee waivers all the time and get in. People get LSAC fee waivers and pay no app fees and get in. I think the only way it can negatively impact your app is if you harass a school to give you one or after they turn you down. Besides, plenty of schools give fee waivers out like candy if you go to their tables at law school fairs.

I already have an LSAC waiver, so I didnt need them. But I know I was offered one at just about every school I talked to.

No, it shouldn't hurt your chances. If they agree to give you a merit-based waiver, it's because your numbers are good enough. This in itself shows you have a decent chance.
