LOR Thank you notes

Post by JJDancer » Wed Sep 29, 2010 12:28 pm

How did you guys thank someone when you don't know what they wrote in your LOR?
I know what one of my writers wrote since she emailed me a copy (without my asking for it) so I can thank her for her kind words etc. I know the thank you card is just a general appreciation for writing the letter but I'm just wondering how to phrase it when I don't know what they wrote.

I got my recommenders a $15-20 bottle of wine each. Ill also write a thank you note for each thanking them for supporting me in my law school applications.

I wrote something along the lines of "I cannot begin to tell you how grateful I am not only for your taking the time out of your busy schedule to write me a letter of recommendation, but also for completing it so quickly." Insert something about advantage due to rolling admissions, how their letter will be a valuable component of your application, and end with "I will be sure to keep you updated on my admissions decisions, and - once again - I cannot thank you enough" or something like that. I don't know what any of mine wrote, so it was just thanking them for their time and promptness.

That's what I did for the one who has submitted thus far :)

Once, I thanked my professor by giving her a box of chocolate, so how serious are you?

I gave mine alcohol and a thank-you letter. For a professor I had for an English honors seminar on literature in the time of Beowulf I got a bottle of Norwegian mead called Vikings Blood (Egil's Saga is full of drunken violence) and for an econ professor that I had taken several classes with I got a bottle of Belgian beer (econ professors always make example decisions between beer and X). I think it is a good idea to try to get a gift that ties into the class some way.

This is WHY you should do it: I was having the optional interview with a Vanderbilt alum at a Starbucks near campus when the econ prof walked up behind me an patted me on the back to say hi (he probably thought I was on a date). When he found out that I was on an interview, he started singing my praises to my interviewer. He might not have done this if I had not given the gift. If I decide to go to Vandy I might want to apply for the Law and Econ Ph.D. program so I'm also pretty sure I could get another recommendation from him for that as well.
