Duke app, on-campus interview request

Does anyone know what the deal with this is? This morning I got an email saying they have completed their initial review and want me to come to an on-campus interview "as we conclude evaluation."

I have not heard of this happening to anyone else.

Clarification:

My question is: does this mean "youre accepted, come visit" or "we cant decide whether to admit you so we need to interview you in north carolina."

If you look at the "in at duke" thread from last year this happened to at least one applicant. Not sure what the outcome was, though.

Do you live near campus? I can't imagine them asking this of an out-of-state resident.

What's this? Ultimate yield protection? Maybe they give you a full scholly if you show?

Seems likely. It may be "You got the numbers and we love you but we want you to prove you really want Duke by flying your @ss down to Durham..."

no idea, I just read about it happening in the duke thread from last year (I think the applicant I read about was PT but I could be wrong). Maybe they want to know you're serious enough about the school to visit?

OP - did you submit a why duke?

Nope, no "Why Duke." But I did tailor my PS to them a little bit.

I'm disheartened and confused by this.

Both my LSAT and GPA are above their 75th%, but does this mean they are YP'ing what they see as a very good app, or are did they find it lacking in some significant way./

Since this is the first school I have heard from this cycle, this is freaking me out. Thanks for all responses--love you all haha.

I bet is has something to do with YP/scholarships. If you're above both 75%iles you're probably competitive for CCN (or HYS?), so they want to test your commitment before they dish out some crazy scholarship. That, or they're completely in love with your numbers, but one of your LORs made you out to be an axe murderer. In any case, it's worth the trip if you're serious about Duke and not worth it if you have other ambitions.

Duke's 75th percentiles are 3.90/171, so with a 3.91+/172+ you're a lock for CCN and have a shot at HYS. Duke is probably planning to YP applicants with your numbers unless they come to campus to profess their undying love.

Well it seems like I am the only one with my numbers on the PT who got this, which I am taking as a WL since I have neither the time nor the money to fly to Durham.

I am so incredibly discouraged.

It's probably worth letting them know that you are broke and busy -- better to try and work something out than just sit silent.

How serious are you about wanting to go to Duke?
If you are indeed 3.9+/172+ you will get into a higher ranked school guaranteed. If Duke is a safety school for you, just take your waitlist and realize that it was a yield protect and nothing negative about you. If you are serious about going to Duke, then you need to find some way to make it out there, or you need to be in contact with the admissions office to come up with an alternative plan.

The premise of yield protect is that you are perfectly qualified to get in, they just don't want you to count against them for reporting. If you end up taking the YP WL and decide later that you want to go to Duke, you can be pretty confident that they would let you in if you showed commitment.

Well, glancing at Duke's #'s I was wrong. I have above 75th% gpa and exactly the 75th % lsat. What concerns me is that people with better numbers did get accepted on the PT, so I'm hesitant to attribute it to YP. Also, some others who applied PT got the straight WL. So, between acceptance and WL, where does this interview request fall and for what purpose?

Maybe your best bet would be to respond to the request and say you remain interested in duke, you're not opposed to making a trip to do an on campus interview, but that since doing so would be a financial burden you would like to know more information?

I don't think anyone on this board knows any more than you do as to why they requested one :(
