Can I submit a rec before I know where I'm applying?

I'm not quite sure I understand how LSDAS works in this sense. Im not sure where I'm applying yet, but want to get the LoR process rolling. Do I need to know where I'm applying when my recommenders submit their letters (I am giving them an idea so they know what I am aiming for)? Do diff schools want diff things included in the letter?

Here's a link to a thread that answers questions about the application process.

Yes. Your recommendor will send the LOR to LSAC and then they upload it to your account. You then designate which LOR goes to which school. This means you could use a general LOR to send to all schools, but you could, if you wish, also have one school-specific LOR from a recommendor which you then send to only that school.

Are general LoRs the norm? That's all I'm asking for...

So just to confirm -- no specific requirements from schools?

You don't need targeted LORs, but whether they are the norm or whether they are preferred are both good questions. Maybe those who have gone through the process will come and give some insight.

Found this: The LSDAS has you categorize your letters as either “General" or “Targeted". Typically, you send General Letters to all the law schools you apply to, while sending Targeted Letters either to only 1 particular law school or a series of law schools with the same specialty program, like joint JD/MBA or Tax Law. You may submit up to 4 General Letters and an unlimited number of Targeted Letters to the LSDAS.

None of the schools I'm applying to make any specific LoR demands. General letters are the norm.

Think about it -- most people apply to at LEAST five schools and a lot of us are applying to 15 or more. I felt guilty enough asking my prof for ONE letter.

That said, a school specific targeted letter might set your application apart by demonstrating your commitment to that particular program. If you have a dream school that really suits you and a recommender who can speak specifically to your interest and ability to excel there, then go for it.

General letters are the norm. Each recommender sends one to LSAC, and you assign it to each of your law schools.
