I love the argument about "government work" being some kind of reasonable fallback plan if one misses the Biglaw cut! The NPR story kinda blows holes thru that argument, huh?

it's probably some crap in the wall little company. if you just need A lawyer to write some crap, why would you pay 800/hr for a Harvard attorney? i would imagine top firms are not scouring craigslist for potentials the same way a top marketing company wouldn't. online jobs always pay less in any field.

If I graduated from the bottom 20% of Fordham, Cardozo, NY Law School, Brooklyn, etc, I would much rather make 25 bucks an hour + incentives using my degree than waiting tables.

They got at least several hundred resumes, guaranteed. Probably more. Hey, it's a lawyer job, which is something many law grads can't get. I bet it's 20-30% of all law grads. Actually I'd like to see some numbers on that now that I think about it.

$25/hour is crap money. i was making more than that with no degree, and im no bill gates.

Yeah didn't mean to troll Fordham, I'm actually going to apply there, but bottom 20% out of it would still struggle to find gainful employment

The number of unemployed / underemployed lawyers out there flooding the market is far worse than you think.

To get "top dollar" in doc review (which is $32 an hour), you need fluency in a foreign language:

It's sort of sad 0Ls on TLS don't realize how much of an 'underclass' of contract/staff attorneys exist out there. It's also sort of sad that the profession is set up that way.

The median pay rate in the US for someone with a bachelor's degree is about $21.50, and $25 for master's degree (these are total population over 25YO, so starting salary is probably severely less). So $25/hr isn't too horrible for a below median law grad at a below median school.

Its not so much as an under-class as an "untouchable" class. Contract attorneys are generally treated worse than slaves and viewed by other attorneys as sub-human losers. I spoke with a girl at a bar who was dating a contract attorney and I couldn't help but judge her. Its just how it is.

Sad part is that even this line of work is scarce and highly sought after in the current economic climate. I'm somewhat shielded from the market chaos right now because im a junior associate with about 2years experience which makes me fairly profitable. People just coming out of school right now are begging for any kind of work, no matter how pathetic said work might be.

I'd love to see the numbers - how many of the ~45,000 grads go into private firms partner tracks vs. become contract attorneys / staff attorneys / whatever. It's still a fine profession objectively, but certainly a sad contrast to what most decided to sit down and take the LSAT to achieve.
