Top Law Schools

In general, is there sense in applying to a given law school if you know you'd rather go to any other school around its ranking? Is this throwing away a 100 bucks or is it really this much of a crapshoot? For example, 15 accepts you but 16 doesn't but 17 does, etc. or is it normally pretty straightforward?

You're throwing away your money if you let those feelings come through in your application, that's for sure. Ultimately, why apply somewhere you wouldn't want to go to?

would want to go, but if i only apply to like 8 schools in the t-30, and i don't get into any then i could be messing myself up especially when you don't hear back to mid-december when you're already at a disadvantage applying to other schools.

This varies by applicant. Some applicants' acceptances are topped off by a set of peer schools. Other applicants have one acceptance from a school that is significantly higher-ranked than all of their others.

If your numbers are scholarship-territory, then yes. That school's offer could be used for negotiation.
