Ok so I wrote my Why Virginia essay and I have been abbreviating the university's name, after the first instance, as: U.Va. Law. I took it from an email sent to me by the admissions director so I assume that is correct.
What is the proper way to abbreviate University of Michigan? U. M. Law?

Granted, I haven't applied to law schools yet, but writing the university's name, even in abbreviated form, and then adding "Law" sounds a wee bit too clunky to me.
Why not just write "Virginia" and "Michigan" after you write their whole names first? No need to belabor the point. They understand.

Hmm... yah I could do that. Just seems awkard to me "I am excited to attend Virginia" vs "I am excited to attend U.Va. Law"

UMich, Michigan Law, UM, U of M. They're all used commonly and all acceptable abbreviations. But Michigan Law would be the most appropriate for this occasion.

True...but we'll forgive you for just calling us Michigan if you throw in a few backhanded remarks about OSU.
