I was exactly like you! Just two years ago I hated the conspiracy doubtless orchestrated by those in power and chanted liberal songs with delightful glee, denouncing all conservatives as racists, sexists, fascists, and anything else that ends in "ists."

Haven't read it. Being anti-police state does not make me liberal (or socialist).

Helecio-I am just as "fucked" by affirmative action. Funny how you say playing the victim, then turn around and do the same. Love the assumption I am playing the race card for a race I am not.

I am not the victim. I have gotten away with shit right under cop's noses...funny how my black and hispanic friends (even right next to me) seemed to never get away with it. Then again, the more powers you give a cop, the more he will abuse them. Though I must say, the one time a Pentagon cop walked up to me (after 9-11), pulled me away from my grandparents and aunt and told me I fit the profile of an Arab (not to mention my time in Vancouver) pretty much made me realize things about state power and petty crime laws.

Racial profiling is endemic, and arbitrary laws like minor alcohol and drug crimes, the allowance of blanket search and profiling, etc allow it to be so. They also DO NOT REDUCE alcohol and drug use and abuse. So, um, if they do A, and not B (which is the point of it) what else does it do?

I also didn't realize that the allowance of a standing militarized army (ie modern police forces) was a "liberal" idea. Pretty sure it is classical liberalism (hence American conservative).
