Cumulative GPA v. Major GPA

Post by skyisthelimit1 » Wed Aug 11, 2010 2:12 am

Hi all,

Just wondering if your major gpa can play a major role in terms of admissions? I essentially earned B's in all of my science courses, yet in all of my major courses have received nearly all A's and currently maintain a 3.8 major gpa with my senior year still to come.
Although my overall is a 3.4, am I still in good standing at this point for a T20 (pending my LSAT score, which currently stands at 160)?

P.S. I'm realistically aiming for a 167/8.

You can highlight how it's higher than your overall in an addendum if you apply to schools whose median GPA is higher than 3.4, but LSAC doesn't discern between the two. If you go with an addendum, talk about how your major GPA relates to your interest in law and related subjects. You're stuck with the 3.4 for admissions purposes, though.

Law schools only care about your cumulative GPA.

Don't worry about what schools you can get into yet, just aim for the highest possible LSAT score. There's plenty of time afterwards to worry about particular schools
