How to contact admissions?

A lot of people have mentioned successfully meeting with or talking to adcomms about your application. I have not had any luck and I wonder what strategies people use to talk to the right people. I always get busy secretaries whose job is to get you off the phone as quickly as possible.
I'd love to hear from people who were successful about how they got past the gatekeepers to have meaningful contacts with admissions departments without coming across as pushy.

I talked to a few Adcomms...all while visiting schools and not really trying to. At Villanova, I asked to sit in on a class and he had his assistant pulled me into his office after I left the class. At Michigan, I talked to Dean Z at the ASW, etc. In all of the cases, it appeared they were openly trying to avoid the students who were seeking them out...
Note though, I was accepted to all of them before I talked to their Adcomm. I doubt they talk a whole lot before being admitted.
Also, those secretaries have more pull than you think. At Michigan, I talked to who I thought was a secretary a few times and then found out she is the Asst Dir of Admissions and sits on the review board while at the ASW...

I suspect this is the case, but I want to hear from people who have had good interactions with adcomms pre-acceptance. I don't really want to try and schmooze my way into college, but I hear about people having substantive conversations about the school they wish to attend and I wonder how they do it.

I scheduled a tour of one school and the asst dean of admissions was the one who took me on it.

I guess this all goes to show that it pays to be polite and present yourself well to everyone you meet at law schools; you never know who could turn out to be a person of influence.
