kaplan and other companies have admissions consultants that help with essay topic brainstorming, editing, resume prep, helping to select list of schools to apply to, etc.
Has anyone every used one of these services? Who did you use,and was the experience helpful?
I'm overwhelmed studying for the lsat and don't know where to begin with the app process. I'd like to NOT have to take a year off. Any companies out there that you'd recommend?

Don't bother with one, they won't help you any more than we all can.

A buddy of mine used one for undergrad and it seemed to help him quite a bit as he ended up going to hyp with not amazing numbers. I think the only reason to get one would be if your someone with ridiculous softs who needs help presenting them to adcomms in the best possible way.

The above advice is probably true if you don't have any element of your application that is out of the ordinary, as in addendums, criminal history, etc. If you have things that need to be handled delicately, it can't hurt to have the advice of someone who has actually been in an admissions committee. I don't know about kaplan or powerscore's service, but some companies provide consultants with real experience on admissions committee. But if your numbers are what they are, and don't need an explanation or a "spin", and you're otherwise just kind of a run of the mill application, without incredible softs like the poster above mentioned, then it might not be worth the money. But, given the possible return in admissions or scholarships, it's not a huge investment.

A lot of the advice on TLS is very good, a lot of it is shit. If I could afford a good consultant, I would rather get one and not have to depend on my ability to discern the good advice from the shitty.
