Will a top MBA help me for JD Admissions? 162 lsat 3.78

Hi everyone,

I need some TLS advice. I graduated from Columbia two years ago with a 3.78 GPA and I took the LSAT three times, 157, cancel, 162 and applied to four law schools. I was rejected from all of them except Fordham. I cannot take the LSATs again until Sept 2011. I took my GMATs and scored a 780 and applied to business schools and was accepted everywhere (applications fees are ridiculous for MBA's btw lol)

Now I am going to start a two year MBA at Harvard University in the fall. I was wondering, has anyone applied to law school after an MBA? I will take my LSAT again and can hopefully score above a 165. Does an MBA make you more competitive?

Also, I am going to business school because I want a viable backup in case my law school aspirations do not work out. I also did not want to attend a non t14 law school, so I am willing to wait

Thanks!

Also, I applied to Northwesterns JD/MBA program and was rejected.

A Harvard MBA is going to be more valuable than any JD you can get with your LSAT.

screw law school. You cant get into anywhere half decent with that lsat. Just stick with the Harvard MBA and you will prob make more money than you could with a JD from a mediocre school.

Yeah, um, OP, I don't think anyone loves the practice of law enough to go to a mediocre school after gradating from HBS

You're crazy.

I was thinking that If I retook my LSAT and got a 165ish, would a Harvard MBA help me get into a top 14 (Georgetown, UVA, Upenn). I know t6 are out of reach, but perhaps an ED after my first year of business school to UVA or Upenn may be plausible?

Yes, I know its crazy but I am very passionate about going to law school.

I am actually interested in what people say about this. I actually have a real poor lsat record (below 160's) but pretty good GMAT and WE. I am probably going to business school (it may not be Harvard, but more likely NYU, Columbia, Penn) and I am curious to know if anyone applied to LS after BS.

OP: Is your company paying for your MBA or r you paying on your own? 5 years of school is a lot of debt....

Not to sound obnoxious, but if you got 3.78 at Columbia and got into Harvard MBA, you must be pretty smart - which means that if you put in a few weeks of studying you could definitely score over a 170 on your LSAT.
In regards to the question, I doubt weather an MBA will help you get into a t14. LSAT/GPA is >95% of admissions.

yea this is what I was thinking too. I mean I know ppl on here say that the GMAT is fo rthe most part easier than the LSAT but seriously, you got into HBS and aren't getting above 165? OP I understand you want to go to law school/practice law, but maybe life has something in store MUCH better for you. To answer your question though, I'd have to believe that a degree from HBS would help minimally (equivalent of adding 1-2 points to your LSAT)

I've been told that LS AdComms don't care too much about post-graduate work...but then again it's freaking Harvard Business School. Why would you want to go to LS after that though?

I have a strong interest in politics and believe that a law degree from a prestigious institution would provide opportunities in that arena. Additionally, I am very interested in the law and always thought of myself attending law school. Perhaps, life has something better in mind for me, but I am not willing to give up yet.

In response to an earlier post…. I did study for the LSAT substantially the second and third time. The first time, I only did 2 practice exams (157). Second exam, I did 10-12 exams (averaged a 165-167 and cancelled), Third exam, 10 more exams and averaged (166-168) and got a freaking 162! (Logic game deduction killed me!). This test makes me feel very inadequate.

I am going to HBS because I got in and I would be foolish not to attend, but still have some hope that I can attend a t14 law school. I just feel like I am incapable of going past the 170 mark, no matter how hard I practice (plus I only have like 4-5 exams left). I am thinking that if I can get a 165 (within my practice), my UG GPA and Harvard MBA could get me into UVA, Gtown or Upenn.

Just want to point out that the average LSAT for Harvard UG is a 165. Therefore, half of Harvard students score above and below the average. It is completely possible that someone with a Columbia UG scored a 162. Plus OP said his practice range was in the high 160s.

I don't get why people think they are 100% sure this is a flame.

The only thing that kinda seems flamey to me is the fact that he got into HBS with only two years of experience. Thought you needed more, but I could be wrong. Otherwise, this seems pretty reasonable to me

Yes its true that most top business schools need about 3+ years work experience. I work as an analyst for an investment bank and at the end of a two year program, many of them go to Biz school (esp the ones that do not get promoted to an associate). Not sure what OP does, but its not impossible to get into a top MBA program with only 2 years experience.

read it over again....

this person, is going to spend 200k dollars at Harvard Business School as a backup in case his law school aspirations don't work out.....

now it is possible to get into HBS with 2years of experience, but that person has to be employed at something like a top consulting or investment banking firm in most cases (esp when you have a 3.78 GPA)... somebody with that background would have a much better grasp of opportunity costs and plain fricking reality then this person does.

which of course he doesn't, since its a made up scenario by a troll
