I've never seen this come up in any of the gap year threads. If I'm taking a year off, my coverage under my parent's plan is going to lapse. If I'm not holding down a full-time position, what can I do to get health insurance?

Blue Cross / Blue Shield is probably your best bet aside from employer-provided insurance.

If you're normal college student age, you should still be well on your parents insurance with just a year off.

My mom told me this doesn't take effect until January (she may be wrong though). I got kicked off her dental and vision even though I'm going to LS in the fall, she said she can't add me on until January.

Screw insurance, too expensive! Just be really careful. 1) No hookers. 2) Don't run red lights. 3) No smoking and/or hardcore drinking. Don't let 'them' win!

I'm on BC/BS's Tonik program. It's not fantastic, but it's not bad considering that it's $100/month (for me) and includes dental and vision. Most other plans I looked at were that expensive and had no dental or vision coverage.

The law "technically" takes effect 9-23-10. However, because most insurance plans don't re-up until January 2011, coverage doesn't start for most plans until 1-1-11.

Buy it yourself. I'm employed by a firm that offers health insurance to all employees, but they cheaped the fuck out and slashed benefits while jacking premiums. I jumped ship to a BCBS individual plan and, while I pay slightly higher premiums, my deductible and OoP are WAY lower, so my "total healthcare cost before everything's free" (12xpremium + deductible + OoP) for each year dropped from $6,000 to $4,500.
