Out of school 15 years, only one LoR possible

Post by Juuuulie » Tue Jul 06, 2010 10:01 pm

I graduated from Notre Dame in 1995, with a 3.64 gpa. Just got my LSAT score back and it's a 164. I'm in Southern California and want to stay local.

How much will only having one recommendation letter affect me? So far, I've only found one professor who remembered me.

ETA (meant to put this in): I'm one of the principals of a family business, so professional letters are hard, too.

In your case you can use a professional reference. With one academic and one professional you will be fine. Just look at the policies of the schools you're attending.

I recall reading some applications noting that the admissions understood if you had been out of school for a lengthy period of time. They usually stated that you should attempt to get letters from folks you worked under instead - but by all means, try to get in contact with Professors.

Apologies to both of you for not putting an important detail to start with. Professional letters are also difficult. I'm VP of a manufacturing company, but it's family run, so I can't get a non-family letter from there, and I've been there since 1997.

You still need at least two letters, so like nightrunner said, find someone outside the company.

Who is, professionally, the closest person you work with to your status that isn't family?

Ask them.

I highly recommend not going to law school. Is it worth it to spend $150,000 to make $50,000 or worse, with almost zero chance of advancement?

You have to have at least two letters. What about a client? An employee? You could sign up for a continuing educations course (UCLA has an extension program) and ask that teacher. If you can't get anything quality, just look for something to check the box. LORs are usually a very minor part of an application, so I doubt it will hurt you overall.
