Minority status - Asians?

Does admissions make a difference between asian groups? chinese, koreans, filipinos, indians, combodians, hmong etc have different economic status, and could not be more different.

I know that almost all schools give weight to minorties, but mostly to african americans and hispanics. What about asians? Is that almost a negative?

Would not say it is a negative, but generally being asian is not a positive factor in admissions (like being AA, NA, etc).

I would say though, that Hmong would get the better chances of being URM than any other Asian subcategory.

Except that it's not. No asian group is considered a URM. You can, however, write a diversity statement if one is applicable to you.

The operative word is underrepresented. Asians are not generally underrepresented in law school. Unfortunately some groups are better represented than others but admissions committees do not make a distinction between asian groups. Similarly, admissions committees do not make a distinction between hispanic groups either. So an Americanized white hispanic with a "WASPy" last name can get a URM boost while a brown filipino or hmong asian will not.

"URM boost" generally applies to NA/AA/PR/Mex. Evidence shows that other groups can get a small boost (not nearly as big as the URM boost) but it is not nearly as uniform across all schools (i.e. Hispanics in general get a small boost, but PR/Mex get a large one.
