I was really hoping my writers would have emailed me the LOR they sent, but they didn't. Is this a bad sign? The last thing I need in my application package is a lukewarm recommendation.

If you waived your right to see it they will not send it to you...

LOR writers don't routinely send you copies of their letters, especially if you waived your right to access.

Yes, I waived my the right to see it; however, it seems like the vast majority of people on here did so also, but were still sent a copy.

I hope you're right. I've always gotten the impression that it was very common (maybe typical).

I don't understand what gave you that impression, but nothing I've seen on TLS, from people I know, or personal experience points to that.

Agreed with the above poster, it isn't a big deal at all.

Whatever you do, don't ask your LOR writer for a copy! Others on TLS have tried and gotten chewed out due to perceived lack of trust.

Well people on here and on LSN are always talking about how their recommenders wrote about them in glowing terms. Other times they'll say that their recommenders gave them their LOR to look over to see what they think.

I've had to get countless letters of recommendation over the years for various awards/programs, and have only seen a copy of a letter once. I think it's pretty uncommon for professors or employers to do so...

No, when I first began the process, I hadn't expected to get a copy, but after I head that many people were, I started to think that I might be in the minority.

These are probably people who either a) did not waive their right (unlikely), or b) are assuming their LOR was glowing due to the way they felt their recommender perceives them (more likely).

This. I'd wager that a lot of the people on TLS are overachievers who know how to impress professors, but more importantly, are well-informed enough to choose their LOR writers wisely and thus know what was written (even without having read the letter.) I don't expect to see copies of any of my letters, but I still know exactly what they'll say.
