Besides LSAT and GPA , what is the most important thing

Post by SECLAW23 » Wed Jun 23, 2010 12:11 pm

Besides LSAT score and GPA , what is the most important/critical thing that one should do as an undergraduate to improve the chance of Law School admission. (I am not asking what is the next important thing besides LSAT and GPA in an application)

I look forward to the answer. Thanks for your help!

There is nothing else that critical you can do in undergrad. I mean, work experience/extra-curriculars/volunteer work is all helpful.

Besides LSAT and GPA, try and do something that would make you unique and stand out.. whatever that might be

Get at least 1 full year of work experience between undergrad and law school. Go find something interesting, or that at least pays the bills, for a year and do it. Apply during your work year.

Aside from looks, personality, and wealth, what is the next most important thing to picking up women?

Build a really strong relationship with at least two of your professors (adjuncts/grad students don't count). Take multiple classes with them and do well, try to do an independent study or something equivalent with them, have them be an advisor to some organization you start, etc. And then hit them up for excellent LORs. Won't make a huge difference, but besides GPA and LSAT there's not a whole lot to do during undergrad to help your chances. Don't break the law or violate university conduct codes, don't plagiarize, etc. is also TCR.

That's under personality.

I assume you mean "good looks" and financial security for wealth - however personality is a pretty broad term. Everyone has personality - not everyone can pick up women.

How about "applied courage" i.e. courageous acts?

This may sound snide, but I think the most important thing is to not fuck up. Don't get caught plagiarizing (and just don't do it), don't get in trouble with the law, don't write a terrible PS, only get letters from profs you actually know. We all know it's a numbers game, so don't give them a reason to pass you over for someone with similar numbers. Everyone likes to think their softs are pretty good in some respect, but, except for an exceptional few, they aren't.

I know that may sound stupid and obvious, but it's a matter of perspective. Do your best to let them numbers speak for themselves and avoid any major blemishes in the rest of your application. Any effort you spend on a club, or extracurricular stuff would be 100x better spent on the LSAT or your current UG classes.

Go to great lengths to avoid reckless, stupid, or intentionally criminal behavior. Some people have an incredible urge to make their C&F section interesting the year before they apply, after they apply, or after they are accepted.

Applying ED isn't some trump card you need to play. The majority of applicants shouldn't ED.

I second all of the "be a URM" remarks....

Seriously though, im_blue is pretty spot-on. Don't mess up everything else. I don't think there's one "most" important thing after the LSAT and GPA - just make sure everything is decent, or at the very least won't hurt your application. And, since schools do rolling admissions, get your apps in as early as possible.
