Re: 160/2.75. I got an e-mail from Pittsburgh Law Today.
I have ultimately decided to attend Pittsburgh Law. A lot of you mentioned how I should go for it if I am truly interested in law and I guess that's what tipped the scale for me. I imagined myself taking the year off working vs. attending law school and I realized I wanted the latter much more than the former. I'm also afraid I might lose my academic motivation if I started working for a few years.
Even though I understand it is pretty much the worst time to enter law school due to the economic crisis, I don't want to risk getting complacent about law school a few years from now.
Thanks for all your help guys.

Good luck to you! I know what you mean, deciding to take a year off is a big deal - I think a lot of us forget how long a year or more really is.Gamecubesupreme wrote:I have ultimately decided to attend Pittsburgh Law. I don't know if this has been mentioned, but having gone (successfully) through the process of getting in-state status at Pitt for 2L & 3L, I can tell you it will be VERY difficult for you to get in-state coming from Canada.
That said...I'd say this was a reach. Good job!
If you're not all that concerned about costs....well I can tell you that I feel I've gotten a great education at Pitt so far (I'm a rising 3L). Obviously I have nothing to compare it to but it seems like a great place to study law.

It's not the worst time at all, actually: everyone who can is desperately trying to get back into some form of higher education because the job market is so poor. In fact, it's sort of the perfect time to enter law school. I can't believe how many people seem to lose sight of the fact that the economy is likely to have substantially improved three years from now.Gamecubesupreme wrote:Even though I understand it is pretty much the worst time to enter law school due to the economic crisis, I don't want to risk getting complacent about law school a few years from now.
Anyway, I think you'll look back on this as being the right decision. Good luck to you!

First, congrats to OP. If nothing else, you got balls. Sitting for the LSAT four times takes a special kind of person; I hope you sustain your ethusiasm and persistence for the next three years.romothesavior wrote:How are the job prospects at Pitt?reverendt wrote:I don't know if this has been mentioned, but having gone (successfully) through the process of getting in-state status at Pitt for 2L & 3L, I can tell you it will be VERY difficult for you to get in-state coming from Canada.

Romo: Fair to mediocre, but that's not surprising? Pittsburgh is a unique market in that it's fairly isolated from the major markets and the fresh meat primarily comes from in town (Pitt/Duq or former Pittsburghers).
From what I'm told, if you graduate Pitt in the bottom half, you're in trouble. The top 40% have healthy crack at jobs--mostly in Pittsburgh, but also in Philly and DC. Top 10% have an outside shot at BigLaw in NY, but generally do well for themselves in town (JonesDay, ReedSmith, etc). Outside of those three markets, it's a crapshoot and you've got to bust out the rolodex, start cold calling, and live on a prayer.

Did OCI ever "happen" at Pitt, even in the boom years?xyzzzzzzzz wrote:MJMD wrote:It's not the worst time at all, actually: everyone who can is desperately trying to get back into some form of higher education because the job market is so poor. Except that OCI happens after 1L.

I'm really not sure how this year's graduating class is making out, but this sums up the current situation for my rising 3L class.
Those in the top 1/2 who were "on the ball" as far as pursuing summer jobs have for the most part found some kind of paying gig...and usually somewhat related to their area of interest (people who want firm work are working at firms, those who want gov't have gov't jobs, etc.)
The top 6-8% seems to have landed biglaw gigs.
And yes, there is OCI. 60 firms came for OCI in 2008. Of course that number was cut in half for 2009.

Did they offer you a spot outright, or did they simply ask if you were interested? Or did they offer you a spot after you responded to the e-mail saying you were interested? I got an e-mail a couple of weeks ago after the second deposit deadline passed asking me if I was still interested. I said I absolutely was, but I haven't heard anything back.Gamecubesupreme wrote:I have ultimately decided to attend Pittsburgh Law. I got an e-mail asking whether I'm still interested. I replied yes and they gave me a call literally 3 seconds after I sent the e-mail and asked if I will take the seat.b.j. wrote:Did they offer you a spot outright, or did they simply ask if you were interested? FWIW, I have know of a 3L at Pitt who was hired by an IP firm after 1L and they paid the rest of his tuition. (He is/was a chemical engineer). Although, two weeks ago they rescinded and gave him 90 days to pay back all of his tuition...which is now ineligible for federal aid.
OP, I highly doubt you will obtain PA residency for 2L/3L. PA requires like a year of residency prior to school starting to qualify. They do not count any months in which you attend schools towards residency.

Re: 160/2.75. I got an e-mail from Pittsburgh Law Today.
I think the law school industry is one of those fascinating commodities that never seems to function in accordance to normal free market principles. Law schools can charge whatever they want because there are plenty more applicants than spaces available. The schools don't have to worry about students who can't pay upfront because they all have near unlimited access to federal and private loans that will happily provide them with many thousands of dollars worth of high interest non-dischargeable debt. This allows schools that offer a "less prestigious" product to charge as much or sometimes even more than the top tiered law schools can. At the same time, the supply of new graduates far exceeds the number of new jobs created in the legal industry (even in good times). While law hiring has proven to be cyclical, overall enrollment at law schools goes up year after year - never down. In fact, during recessionary times when law hiring is hit the hardest, college students inexplicably line up to take the LSAT and enroll in law school in record numbers.
Going to law school these days is at best a gamble and at worst a life sentence to mounds of high interest student debt. If you recognize that what you are doing is indeed a huge gamble, then by all means go for it. But do not be surprised if by the end of three years and $150,000 later you are in a much worse financial situation than you are in today.

They rescinded and want the money back? Can they do that?blowhard wrote:FWIW, I have know of a 3L at Pitt who was hired by an IP firm after 1L and they paid the rest of his tuition. I'm guessing it was in the contract he signed when they offered to pay his tuition after 1L SA. My mom is friends with his mom so I got this all second-hand. From the way she described it, the contract said something akin to "if for any reason you do not end up working here...".Desert Fox wrote:They rescinded and want the money back? Honestly I would take the opportunity that has been presented in front of you. Who knows if you can get a better score? Who knows what can happen after some time off? Things occur in life unexpectedly and can stop your dreams.
You have chance at a law school that Applied to. You intended to go. Why not take that chance.'
I have a similar GPA and know that getting off waitlists with low gpas dont always occur.
GO to PITT!

Your friend should get a lawyer to look over this contract, because it sounds really suspicious and possible illegal.

Whoever said WE doesn't matter is full of it. NW lets in almost nobody without it, and if you get a good job and do something there that can add to your boring softs. Then you can retake the LSAT, do better, and have a better shot at it all.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
