I think 2) definitely happens. I'm sure many of the other things are true, as well, but if I was accepted to Harvard I would use that to my advantage everywhere else.

I don't think columbia gives out hamiltons or the half hamiltons ( I forget the name) based on whether or not you got admitted to Harvard. From what I can tell, these are usually given out with your initial offer of acceptance, when columbia would not know whether or not you have been accepted to Harvard.
