In my understanding, and if this is incorrect, please chime in and correct me -- the PS is there to state who you are as a person, how you got where you are and why a specific law school will serve your legal ambitions.
This said, if well written, is it wise to also attach something you hope to accomplish in law. I know I feel very strongly about the current internship system in the US, and its failure to live up to the standards set by the apprenticeship of the 1700s which are a large part of major companies' justification to not pay employees. Would it be wise for me to speak about this further if I believe it would reveal my ability to research and debate effectively, and honestly be something I will be campaigning for from day one... or would they read this and think, "why the hell is he bothering us with this?"

it's a bs system. according to the apprenticeship system, dudes would get shelter and food while they assisted a virtuoso in their field, until age 21 when they were left alone and ensured that they had all the means to achieve success in the virtuoso's field.
the way it seems to work right now is companies don't give shelter, food, teach truly tangible skills, get free labor and the vast majority of the time fail to make sure they have a job secured. it seems to not fit one of the dozen necessary conditions that made the apprenticeship system work in america. if anybody needs minimum wage, wouldn't it be college students?
if only they could stand up for themselves as adults, and not just randomly freak out and smoke pot all day.

Writing about why you want to practice law is good if it is related to you. This is a personal statement, and the purpose is to find out about you as a person.

yeah, this is more of just a random thing i'm passionate about. i don't think it reveals too much about what i'm like in my free time or why am i who i am. hence, it not being a personal statement. i would attach it as a separate statement...

No attachments. Submit what the application asks for; no more, no less.
One Dean of Admissions I heard speak to a bunch of prospective applicants said that the more a person sent in, the more likely he would think the person was trying to disguise or over-compensate for a weakness. His quote: "the thicker the package, the 'thicker' the student."
If you are passionate about it, you can try working it into your PS. But don't make it a 2 pg summary of your opinions. You can't do justice to any research like that in 2 pages.

Thanks... good line, but does it really matter if the students are not thin.

Incorrect, to some degree. The PS is to tell the school about you. Again, I will bust out the W&L advice, since it's quite good.
The personal statement is your opportunity to give us a sense of who you are beyond what we can glean from the rest of the paper we've required of you. The best use of that opportunity? Tell us something about yourself that we won't discover otherwise. As a starting point, we recommend you imagine that our admissions committee has one seat available, and is considering your file and one other, both with the same numerical qualifications. Your personal statement will be read aloud. What do you want us to know about you before we make a choice? What makes you who you are?
We're willing to take your application as sufficient evidence of your interest in studying law, so you needn't try to convince us of the sincerity of your ambition. Remember, we're trying to get an idea of the voice you might bring to campus. While you'll do a lot of talking about law here, of course, we're after a sense of what might inform your contribution to the conversation. So tell us about your losing season, your musical aspirations, that pivotal vacation experience, the single most important piece of advice you've ever received, your troubled (or wonderful) relationship with your sibling, why you volunteered… you get the idea. Those are the things that bring manila folders to life.
