Younger brother has question...

YEah, my younger bro got into our state school and NYU. State school would be FREE, but NYU would be 35 grand per year. He wants to be a lawyer, as it is a family thing. SO, state school or NYU aka massive debt?

Wherever he can get a significantly higher GPA (though I still doubt 6 figures would be worth this). If GPA would probably be the same at each, then free school (assuming he is dead-set on becoming a lawyer).

You mean for undergrad or law school?
For undergrad, bk is right.
For law school, "state school" better be Michigan, Penn, Boalt, or Virginia to compete with NYU.

But, yes, unless it's Michigan, UVA or Berkeley we're talking about, NYU is the obvious choice.

Definitely wasn't. With a deceiving name like "University of Pennsylvania", it seems disingenuous of them to be a private university.

Uh, I would guess UG, but it's definitely not implied. In fact, the phrase "He wants to be a lawyer, as it is a family thing." would indicate LS more strongly.

State school for free. That way come law school time, he can take on alcoholism inducing debt instead of /self debt.

Hmm. I took "He wants to be a lawyer" as the opposite, feeling that it implicitly meant he was not talking about LS (because going to LS generally means you want to be a lawyer so why would you even mention that, though of course there are faults with that logic). I also looked at the 35k and assumed it wasn't LS because NYU Law is more expensive, however a scholarship could be in there.
After reading it again, I feel that you're right, it isn't clear. Though I still get the strong feeling, due to phrasing, that the OP is talking about UG.

IMO if you give up a full ride to a decent school for undergrad, you had better be going to a nationally renowned school (e.g. HYPS, MIT, CalTech, etc.).

Which state school? Where he plans to practice is a big deciding factor. You can't go by rank alone. If you're in Texas, UT trumps NYU for sure as far as job prospects go.

The only time UG name might be worth significantly increased debt is if you're going to be featuring it on your resume (as in, not continuing on to business/law/med school).
If you go to law school, the answer to "Where did you go to school?" is always the name of your law school, not your UG. Same for biz school. Same for med.
If you're after an advanced degree, UG is a stepping stone... and it really doesn't matter if it is a bright shiny stone, or a dark and dingy one. Once you use it to get to your destination, nobody is ever going to go back and look at it.
d34dluk3 pointed out the very few exceptions to this (HYPS, MIT, etc...) And it needs to be on this level. There are probably 8 or 9 schools max where the name of your UG will add any sort of value after you receive your advanced degree. T20 UG doesn't matter.

I don't know... if it was law school, why would he have to saw "he wants to be a lawyer?" Would that not be implied? I think it was OP's way of saying "he eventually wants to go to LS, so, with that in mind, what undergrad should he choose?"
Assuming that is the case, I would say state school for sure. A bunch of undergrad debt could make him more debt averse when it would actually be wise to take the more expensive school.
