Top Law Schools

I am a s/w engineer with 9+ years experience working out of India. I am also thinking of doing my JD from the US. I came across a summer school course at Harvard Summer School on Intellectual property

I am thinking of attending the course with the following objectives:
1. To obtain knowledge about Intellectual Property and associated legal issues
2. To add an additional qualification on my resume so that it looks good when applying for JD program
3. Network with law school professors or other professionals interested in IP

Do you think these objectives would be met adequately by summer school? The flip side is that the program costs a bomb especially for a foreign student like me.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Harvard Summer School and Harvard Extension are big cash cows for the university. In your situation, it would be a waste of $.

Law school admissions won't care. It all comes down to LSAT and GPA.

If you want a broad overview of IP law, my suggestion is you buy a commercial study aid and read it yourself.

If you want to see what law school classes are like, find a school that will let you sit in on a class for free. Many will, especially if they think you are a prospective applicant.

If you can get over to the US, you might want to think about studying for the Patent Bar and becoming a patent agent. You can do this before going to law school. If you can do it, and get a job as a patent agent, you'll be in a much better position to network and make contacts at that point.

Finally, an alternative to getting a US JD is to get your law degree in India, then come to the US for an LLM.
